The Pear Tree Wedding

fiona + trystan

From the hotel, to the church, to the reception venue, the bride and groom chose to keep needless decoration to a minimum and utilise the natural charms of each beautifully chosen venue. The result was an elegantly minimal yet stylish affair.

My first stop was De Vere Cotswolds Water Park, where the groom, his groomsmen, father and soon-to-be father-in-law were all getting ready for the big day ahead. It was a wet and grey day outside, but the atmosphere inside was as bright and joyous as any other wedding morning. As the large group got ready, Trystan decided to surprise them with incredibly thoughtful gifts he had prepared beforehand for each and every one of his party, which included handwritten notes, personalised hip flasks and cufflinks. Once they had finished with their preparations, it was time to start making our way over to the next venue.

Our next stop was St Mary’s Church, a short drive away, where the ceremony was to be held. With impossibly high ceilings and spacious interior, the church was beautifully light, perfect for photos. Guests filtered into the church and took their seats as we all waited with bated breath for the Fiona’s arrival (and boy, did she make us wait!). Finally, the church doors opened once more and the service was truly underway! As Trystan and his groomsmen waited patiently at the end of the aisle, the bridesmaids made their way in one by one, followed ultimately by the beautiful bride and her father. The service progressed effortlessly and with their loved ones gathered as witnesses, Fiona and Trystan became husband and wife!

The last, but by no means least, stop for the day was The Pear Tree. With a charming traditional brick exterior and elegantly modern interior, the country house venue was an alluring mix of contemporary and old. I couldn’t help but smile when I realised that the tree that greeted me at the front of the venue was, in fact, a pear tree! Consisting of several stunning rooms, including an Orangery and library room, it was a gorgeous place to host a reception. The outdoor space was just as beautiful, with a lined walkway heading towards a gazebo amidst a manicured lawn.

Drinks and canapés were served in a room upstairs, whilst downstairs, the Orangery was already set up for wedding breakfast and ready to go. I went around the room upstairs to snap a few candids of guests as well as downstairs to capture the wedding breakfast set up. Aside from the bride and groom, I also love taking natural photos of guests having fun as well as the small details of the day to tell the whole story of the wedding day completely.

As the guests mingled, we took the newly wedded couple out for a few moments for some couple portraits around the venue. It was a shame that the rain still hadn’t let up, but Fiona and Trystan decided to brave it outside anyway, so we managed to get some gorgeous images in the garden despite the rain! We made sure to make use of the flower-lined walkway, the gazebo, and the winding outdoor staircase.

After a little while, the guests were called into the Orangery to be seated before Fiona and Trystan were announced and made their entrance as the new, official Mr and Mrs Cullen! Breakfast went underway for the guests and for myself (and I’ll be forever grateful to the lovely couple for the most delicious beef Wellington I’ve eaten!). Before long, it was time for the speeches; Fiona’s father, Trystan and his best man all served up wonderful speeches to their friends and family.

Then, sadly, it was my time to leave. I’d had a wonderful time with everyone but I bid them farewell and wished them well as a long drive back to London awaited me. Fiona and Trystan were such a gorgeous couple, so kind and thoughtful, and I’m so happy that I got to be a part of it all!

Chicheley Hall Wedding

lucy + shain

A grand staircase lined with fresh flowers and greenery to accompany the bride as she walked down to meet the nervous groom at the end of the aisle.

After a long 2.5hr drive, I finally made it to Chicheley Hall in Milton Keynes, a gorgeous Grade I listed mansion set on 80 acres of beautifully kept grounds. Making my way into the main house, I was met by a stunning set of marble arches and pillars to the right. To the left, a large, sweeping staircase lay before me framed by dramatic windows, and lined abundantly on one side with white and pink florals. The grounds outside were equally as beautiful, with manicured lawns, tree-lined paths and a lake we were definitely going to make use of later in the day!

Once I had made my rounds of the venue as per usual, it was time to officially start my day so I went in search of Lucy to see how she was getting along with the preparations. As she still a little while to go, I bought her dress, shoes and other accessories to another suite to give them a little photoshoot (these images always end up being some of my favourite from the gallery)! I then made my way back to Lucy to capture the rest of the bridal preparations: the finishing touches to hair/make-up, getting into the dress and lastly, a few bridal portraits.

As Lucy met with the registrar, I headed downstairs. Most day guests had already arrived and taken their seats in the ceremony hall, Shain and his groomsmen were chatting away and mingling as we all waited for the bride’s entrance. Then the time finally arrived! Lucy’s bridesmaids made their way down the wide staircase in pairs, leading the way for Lucy and her dad as Shain waited for her at the top of the aisle. She looked stunning as she walked down, as she and her dress were back-lit by the light-filled windows behind her. The ceremony proceeded smoothly and they were pronounced husband and wife!

Drinks and canapés followed in the gardens just outside, where Lucy and Shain also had a bouncy castle and an air hockey table set up for their guests and little ones. We used this time and open space for the group photos, which didn’t take too long at all as their group shot list was kept to a minimum.

We then took the newly wedded couple away to get their couple photo session. First stop? That gorgeous lake around the back of the house! I’m sure you guys will all agree with me when I say that the photo (see below) taken there is just magical, with Lucy and Shain embracing in the foreground, the house in the background, and the reflection of it all in the lake. It’s, hands down, one of my absolute favourites from the day and I knew it would be as soon as I snapped it! We walked back to the main house, snapping as we went; as I’d once heard from a photographer I had previously worked with: every walk is a photo opportunity! I love capturing these candid moments, in between poses, as some couples are not the most comfortable in front a camera, this is a great way to get beautifully natural photos.

Once the reception room was all set up, and before the guests were to be corralled in for the wedding breakfast, I made sure to take some photos of the set up. Lucy, being a graphic designer, had designed all of the graphics needed for her big day so it was extra important that we documented her gorgeous work! 4pm rolled around, and the guests were all gathered into the main hall, which had been transformed from the ceremony hall into the breakfast hall. As the wedding party and guests enjoyed their food and each other’s company, I took this time to also refuel myself.

As they finished up, the best man, groom and bride’s father took to the stage with their speeches (one of my favourite parts of the day!). Soon after, as their day guests gathered around and their evening guests filtered in, it was time for the cutting of the cake. Before long, all the guests had moved along to the dance floor as we awaited Lucy and Shain’s first dance as a wedded couple! Once they had finished and the guests began to take to floor, I snapped a few last shots as it was time for me to pack up. I had such a great day with Lucy, Shain and their loved ones that I was reluctant to go but I bid them farewell and left them to enjoy the rest of their night with their nearest and dearest.

Leez Priory Wedding

katie + david

Filled with character, Leez Priory is a Tudor manor house wedding venue situated in the Chelmsford countryside, with a stand alone Great Tower set on 40 acres of private grounds.

One thing I like to do is to arrive a little earlier in the mornings, before my day officially starts, to take some time to walk around the grounds. It’s a great time to scout for photo locations to use later in the day when we go for the couple session. Upon arrival at the venue, I was welcomed by imposing double oak doors leading into a distinctive carriageway featuring a cartwheel chandelier. It was like taking a step back in time! I loved how Leez Priory has kept its olden day charm evident in so many corners of the venue.

The day started in the main house with Katie as she was getting her hair and make-up done, we gathered her accessories, shoes, perfume and invitation set to photograph. Not everyone chooses to get these details photographed but I absolutely love doing it and it adds such a lovely touch to the wedding story! After we had done that, we joined Katie and her entourage as they were almost finished with getting ready to take some morning preparation photos.

We then made our way out of the main house to the Granary, a small cottage close by, where David was getting ready with his groomsmen. Here, we captured them putting on the final touches, cufflinks, ties, jackets, shoes etc. We then stepped outside for a couple of group photos of the whole entourage. It was then time for us to make our way down to the Coach House barn, a short walk away, to get ready for the upcoming ceremony!

As David and his entourage waited at the top of the aisle, they greeted their nearest and dearest, family and friends started filling up the seats in the barn. I went back out to the main house to wait for Katie to start making her way down, not long now! A little while later, Katie, looking absolutely gorgeous in her white dress, appeared from behind the giant oak doors accompanied by her father and bridesmaids. Making our way to the ceremony, I could see the excitement in their faces as they neared the barn and as they waited outside for their cue.

The cue came and they were off! One by one, the bridesmaids made their way down the aisle, leading the way for Katie and her father, who were coming up behind them. Once Katie’s father had given her hand to David, the ceremony was truly under way. It all went off without a hitch, they gave their vows, exchanged rings and sealed it all with a kiss!

When the formalities were done with, the day guests all made their way to the inner courtyard to relax and enjoy the drinks and canapés. We used this time to do the group photos, this usually takes longer than couples might expect, as getting all the groups together is tedious work! (Quick tip: it runs much smoother when a list is made beforehand and a groomsman or bridesmaid is allocated to help with the gathering of the groups on the day.) The bridal party plus groomsmen decided to pop open a bottle of champagne, which made for a great photo opportunity! I really appreciated how much space we had to work with at Leez Priory, even with just the generous size of the courtyard, as there had been times in smaller venues, it was a struggle to carve out a big enough space for larger groups.

It was then time to take Katie and David away for their couple photos. Having scouted out a few quaint corners of the venue earlier, we revisited them with the newlywed couple for their own little photoshoot. This is always my favourite part of the day as it’s an absolute pleasure to capture the abundance of love between couples who have just made their vows to each other. It also gives them a bit of time to decompress away from their guests and the photos that come out of these sessions will always be my favourites in the wedding gallery! Katie and David were the sweetest couple, so easy to work with, and you could tell how in love they were by the way they spoke to and looked at each other, which was a joy to photograph.

By this time, everyone was hungry (me included!) and eager to take a seat. The couple made their entrance into the converted barn and the wedding breakfast was underway. Katie and David decided to do speeches before eating, and so the maid of honour, best man and newlywed couple all proceeded to deliver their speeches. Whilst they ate, as usual, I was also fuelling up to take on the evening activities.

A couple hours later, evening guests were beginning to trickle in and it was almost time for cake cutting and first dance, which was to take place outdoors. Customarily, these events happen indoors in the UK, so it was really quite special! Katie and David cut their gorgeous 3-tiered cake in front of the carriageway and then took to the beautifully maintained lawn for their first dance. After a few more songs, my time with the lovely couple and their guests came to an end. I was sad to go as I’d an amazing day with Katie and David at Leez Priory but as they say, all good things must come to an end!

I hope you enjoyed reading my recount of this gorgeous summer wedding and I’ve included some of personal favourites from their gallery below, so feel free to check them out. st dunstan’s-in-the-east Bridal Shoot

Nestled deep inside central London, lies this gorgeous courtyard, complete with remnants of an old cathedral, providing the perfect backdrop for our fairytale bridal shoot.

Fast forward a few years and I am still obsessed with this first bridal shoot I’d ever organised! Having seen photos of St Dunstan’s in the East, I knew immediately that I wanted to do a shoot here. As it was my first, I decided to start small, and so I set about creating a mood board and a small list of suppliers I would need. I ultimately chose to look for a dress supplier, a model, a make-up artist and a florist to help me turn the vision I had in my head into reality.

After a couple weeks of planning, I had gathered my amazing collaborators (their social media information can be found below!) and we set a date. Having discussed our ideas for the shoot, we loved the idea of a boho, ethereal look and decided to go ahead with this particular theme in mind.

The day started early at 8am; Charlie (model), Ella (make-up artist) and I met at our shoot location to get started on hair and make-up. By 10am, Ella had finished the soft, muted make up look with peaches and reds and I (with my very limited hair dressing skills) had managed to put Charlie’s curls up in a half-up style with braids, perfect for the boho vibe we were going for. At this time, Gemma (florist) also arrived with her beautifully arranged bouquet, using a colour palette of soft pinks, peach and a pop of red for a hint of vibrancy, all tied up with a silk ribbon to finish.

The last step before Charlie fully became a blushing bride was to get into the dress! Miina (dress maker), from Indie Bride London, lent two gorgeous, boho dresses for the shoot. The first was a flowing, layered chiffon dress with lacy off the shoulder sleeves and the other an elegantly minimal, smooth silk dress with a leg split at the front and open lace back.

Once we were all set, it was my turn! We slowly but surely made our way around the grounds, making use of every charming corner we came across to snap the stunning images I’m sharing with you here in this blog post (carry on scrolling to see them!).

I absolutely loved getting to know the suppliers and spending the day with them to create this shoot was such a wonderful experience. I hope you love the final images as much as I (and everyone involved) do and if you have any questions for me, please feel free to drop me a message here or an email at hello@yllweddings.com!
